Governors and caretaker chief ministers of the four provinces also attended the meeting to discuss preparations for the elections and the law and order situation in the country.

Musharraf, who was sworn in as the country’s civilian president Nov 29 for a term of five years after shedding his military uniform, asked the provincial governments to ensure level playing field for all the political parties and directed the governors and the chief ministers to improve the law and order situation.

He also directed the provincial governments to facilitate the foreign observers and the media during the elections and also to release political workers, lawyers and civil society activists who are still in jails, the newspaper said.
