Local press reports quoted Qayyum as saying that a law was being made under which the retired judges would get benefits. The law would also be applicable to the judges deposed under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) on Nov 3.

Asked if the deposed judges would again resume their offices after the emergency is lifted and constitution restored, Qayyum said these judges would not be restored as the judges sacked under the PCO in 1999 also had not been restored.

Qayyum said the opposition demand for a national government was aimed at postponing the general elections. He said that the opposition parties should focus on their election campaign as only 30 days were left for polling.

The Federal High Court would begin its function in the capital Islamabad from Jan 2, he said, adding that the government had already issued an ordinance about it.
