UN Worried over Gitmo Judicial Processes

United Nations, Dec 13 (Prensa Latina) A high United Nations official confirmed the concern of this organization on the difficulties of the judicial processes in the US base of Guantanamo, Cuba.

Martin Scheinin, UN special ombudsman on human rights in the struggle against terrorism, told the Human Rights Council the judicial processes do not fulfil the parameters of international laws.

The 2006 Military Law of Commissions, under which the judicial processes are being regulated, is not compatible with international laws, said the UN specialist.

Scheinin went to a series of hearings in Guantanamo last week, after the US government allowed him to visit the base.

“The hearings were an illustration of the difficulties to carry out fair trials in a far military base,” he stated.

He also said difficulties or impossibility for defense lawyers to present evidence was also confirmed.

“You cannot count on the statements by witnesses living in other countries, or statements by prisoners who are confined in the base,” he said.

He asked for a new visit to Guantanamo to interview the prisoners privately and finish his report to the Human Rights Council.
