Congress authorises Sonia to decide presidential candidate
By IANS New Delhi : The Congress party Monday authorised its president Sonia Gandhi to decide its presidential candidate if the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) reached a consensus over a Congress candidate. The Congress Working Commitee, the apex decision making body of the party, met Monday evening and asked Gandhi to decide on the candidates for president and vice president "if necessary". Senior party member Janardhan Dwivedi, who briefed the media about the meeting, said the party had not taken any decision on the presidential candidate. Both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi have been discussing the issue of a consensus presidential candidate with their allies and friendly parties.
