BJP announces first list of Gujarat candidates

New Delhi : Gujarat’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) late Sunday announced a list of 74 candidates for the assembly election next month, with Chief Minister Narendra Modi contesting from his Maninagar constituency in Ahmedabad.

The BJP central election committee chaired by party president Rajnath Singh met here to deliberate on the names recommended by the state election committee. Senior leader L.K. Advani also participated in the meeting, committee secretary Anant Kumar said.

The list includes 20 new faces with as many incumbent legislators being dropped.

The state’s Finance Minister Vajubhai Vala will contest from Rajkot-II, while Energy Minister Saurabh Patel will seek re-election from Botad.

Dilip Sanghani, who had been elected thrice to the Lok Sabha before losing in the 2004 general elections, will contest the assembly polls from Amreli, part of his former Lok Sabha constituency.

The state goes to polls Dec 11 and Dec 16. The main opposition Congress is yet to come out with its list of candidates.
