Spanish king urges unity of European security forum

Vienna : Spain’s King Juan Carlos has said the foreign ministers at next week’s meeting of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Madrid should aim for a common position, Spanish news agency EFE reported Thursday.

At the inaugural ceremony of the new OSCE headquarters in the Austrian capital, the Spanish monarch Wednesday said he would like to see the 56 member states “speak with only one voice that identifies the points of common interest”.

Spain, which currently holds the forum’s rotational presidency, “has given special importance to the fight against terrorism and helping the victims”, Carlos said.

The Madrid gathering, to be chaired by Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, will provide a perfect opportunity to extend further cooperation in the fight against terrorism, the king said.

“Our common space is inseparable, our cooperation with the Mediterranean and Asian partners must continue, whose greater role in the OSCE has been promoted by our presidency,” Carlos said.
