Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Sunday said no extra land was acquired from farmers for the Tata Motors’ small car unit in Singur.
“We have not acquired any extra land from the farmers in Singur. Whatever land has been taken, will be used for the Tata Motors factory and the ancillary units,” Bhattacharjee said in a meeting at Phansidewa in Darjeeling district.
Bhattcharjee said there would be around 55 ancillary units in Singur, about 40 km from here.
He also said the government is not in a position to give back any land to the farmers acquired for the Tata Motors factory.
The Tata Motors plans to set up the production unit for the manufacture of the world’s cheapest car, Nano, in Singur.
Earlier, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had demanded that nearly 400 acres of land, acquired for developing ancillary units for the project, should be returned to the farmers.
Tata Motors has for its car project acquired 997.11 acres in Singur from the state government.
The project has been mired in controversy as farmers’ groups, led by the Trinamool Congress, have alleged that the state government “forcibly acquired” their farmlands.
