“The method of execution of the Mumbai attack clearly indicates that it was an attack on the liberal and democratic ethos of secular and democratic nations. The attack on Mumbai should lead to re-appraisal of global fight against terrorism,” said Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari at a press conference.

Tewari said that global community must have same yardsticks in fighting terrorism both on the eastern and western borders of Pakistan.

On India’s demand to Pakistan to hand over terrorists, Tewari said: “Issues of diplomacy cannot be conducted through public space. The ministry of external affairs will deal with it and would take appropriate decision.”

Tewari blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for trying to take political advantage of the national tragedy by playing a blame game instead of standing united in the fight against terrorism.

“The BJP is trying to use this national tragedy for electoral opportunity. At this critical moment, the BJP must decide whether it stands for the nation or with the forces inimical to it,” Tewari said.

On Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh’s fate, he said: “Consultations are underway and the moment we will arrive at a decision, we will announce it.”

Deshmukh Monday offered to resign in the face of scathing criticism following the Mumbai terror carnage, which left at least 183 people dead.
