Railways to elite force of 2,000 commandos

New Delhi : In the wake of the recent terror attacks in Mumbai, including on the Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus, the Railways have decided to raise a force of 2,000 commandos, who will be deployed at select stations in the country.

“We have decided to create a striking force of about 2,000 commandos equipped with AK-47 and other modern gadgets keeping the security scenario in mind as there is a need to have such force,” said a senior RPF official on Saturday.

The Railways are likely to spend about Rs 60 crore for the special training of men selected to be in the force.(One Crore: ten million)

“The commandos drawn from RPF would be given special training to tackle terror attacks on railway properties. We are in the process of selecting RPF personnel to be trained as commandos at the BSF training centre,” said the official.

The commandos, will wear a special dress and have state-of-the-art equipment, including bullet-proof jackets.

Once the training process is complete, they would comprise the first of its kind elite force of the Railways, he said, adding that their prime responsibility would be to protect railway properties and passengers.
