Thubten Samphel, a spokesperson for the Tibetan government-in-exile, told IANS that the 73-year-old attended ceremonies to mark the 25th anniversary of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Polish labour leader Lech Walesa. The Dalai Lama also met French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Poland.

Thousands of Tibetans carrying incense sticks gathered here to welcome their leader. This was Dalai Lama’s third visit to Poland. He visited the country in 1993 and 2000.

The Dalai Lama and his supporters fled Tibet after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959. They have lived since then in India, which is now home to over 100,000 Tibetans.
