81 percent of Indian doctors from private sector: minister

New Delhi : Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi Friday informed parliament that the private sector provides 58 percent of hospitals, 29 percent of the beds and 81 percent of doctors.

“Seventy seven percent of all outpatients department cases in rural areas and 80 percent in urban areas are being serviced by the private sector in the country,” Lakshmi told the Rajya Sabha.

Quoting the National Sample Survey Organisation data, the minister said that seven percent of total consumer expenditure in rural India and five percent in urban areas is on medical expenses.

She said the average expenditure per hospitalisation in government hospitals of rural India is Rs.3,238 while the cost in private hospitals is Rs.7,408.
