The incident took place in Lateri of Vidisha district when the NSUI workers, celebrating the appointment of central minister Suresh Pachauri as the state Congress chief, took out a rally and the Bajrang Dal workers took it as a rally in support of the Valentine’s Day, police said.

Several gunshots were fired and sharp weapons and batons were used by both sides, the police said.

While the Bajrang Dal declared that it would not tolerate Valentine’s Day celebrations or meeting of young couples across the state, NSUI and several other organizations had announced they would prevent any harassment to couples.

Meanwhile, the police in Indore averted a clash between the workers of Shiv Sena workers and the Congress when the former were demonstrating and raising slogans against the Valentine’s Day and nearby the Youth Congress workers were distributing roses to spread the day’s message.

“We, however, reached in time and arrested 25 Shiv Sainiks to avoid any untoward incident,” Superintendent of Police Anshuman Singh Yadav told IANS.
