Pilot killed after 2 U.S. fighter planes crash near Florida

By Xinhua

Washington : A pilot was killed after two U.S. F-15 fighter planes crashed into the Gulf of Mexico near Florida, the Air Force said Wednesday.

The two pilots were ejected and later were rescued. The Air Force said one of them has died, and the other pilot is in good condition.

The jets were on a training mission when they crashed in the air over the Gulf of Mexico, about 80 km from Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

The Air Force said the two jets possibly collided and crashed, and a search and rescue mission was launched by the military and the U.S. Coast Guard.

After an F-15C jet crashed in Missouri in November 2007, the U.S. Air Force grounded nearly all of its F-15 A to D jets. Most of the fleet was cleared to return to service after inspections.
