U.S. Delegation meets Pakistan’s Religious Affairs Minister

Islamabad : A 7-member delegation from the United States has met Religious Affairs Minister Khawaja Attaullah Taunsa Sharif, said an official statement.

Congressman Harry E. Mitchall leads the delegation comprising 3 Congressman and four others.

Matters relating to the reforms in Deeni Madaris (religious schools), Zakat System and the role, functions of the Ministry of Religious Affairs came under discussion.

A senior official of the Ministry briefed the US delegation about the government’s initiatives in the reforms of religious schools, comprising three phases namely registration, rationalization of syllabus and mainstreaming of these institutions.

He informed the delegation that 8,656 religious schools have been registered so far under the new law.
He said that 6000 “Deeni Madaris” (religious schools) have been registered before December 2005.

The statement said all members of the US delegation appreciated the efforts and measures undertaken by the government of Pakistan for initiating reforms in “Deeni Madaras” which are rendering valuable social services in Pakistan.
