Solana to address European Parliament on Gaza, Iran

Brussels : European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana will address the full session of the European Parliament (EP) here Wednesday on the situation in Gaza and on Irans nuclear issue.

On Monday, Solana briefed the EU Foreign Ministers Council on his meeting with Irans top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili in Brussels last week.

Meanwhile, the EPs Committee on Political Affairs, Security and Human Rights of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (EMPA) held a discussion on the sitaution in Gaza here Monday. The chair of the political affairs committee of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Abdullah Abdullah, told the committee that Israel is multiplying the obstacles to peace.

He also criticised Israel for attributing too much importance to the rockets launched from Gaza.

“Only two people have been killed on the Israeli side compared to 437 Palestinian casualties” from the Israeli air raids, he said.

Palestinian MP Zuhair Sanduka maintained that “Gaza has become a giant prison” and spoke of the plight of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians suffering from the food and petrol blockade.

EP Vice-President Luisa Morgantini said “the Annapolis final document speaks only of the United States, with the European Union just paying for what has been destroyed”.

The Italian MEP described Ehud Barak as “more a minister of war than a minister of defence.”
