New Delhi : P. Venugopal, former director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), has offered to help a nine-year-old heart patient whose mother had unsuccessfully moved the Delhi High Court for extension of the cardiologist’s tenure.

“I have knowledge about the case and am ready to help the ailing child. Even though I have retired, if the family approaches me, I shall do whatever possible on my part,” Venugopal told IANS.

Mira Mishra, the mother of the boy, had urged the court to give the cardiologist an extension so that her son’s treatment did not remain incomplete.

Mishra said one of her son’s heart valves was not functioning properly. Venugopal and his team have been treating the boy since his birth.

However, the court dismissed the plea, branding it a “prompted petition” just before Venugopal’s retirement. The doctor retired Wednesday after being associated with the institute for 49 years – from being an MBBS student to becoming its director.

Venugopal further said that even if the family does not approach him, the case would be taken care of by other doctors.

“AIIMS is a big institute and there is no shortage of efficient doctors. I am sure all cases pending will be transferred to them,” he added.
