A group of armed rebels first attacked the Lakshmipur police station and then blasted the block office of Jamui district, about 200 km from here.

Later they blew up railway tracks at two places. The tracks were blown up between Narganjo and Ghorparan stations in Jamui district and near Ghoghi-Bariarpur village on the Jamalpur-Kiul section in Munger district. This disrupted movement of trains on the Patna-Howrah route, a railway official said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar said there was an exchange of fire between policemen and the Maoists but no casualties had been reported.

“Maoist guerrillas opened fire on policemen to create panic and bombed the block office,” Kumar said.

The Maoists have given a call for a shutdown in five east Bihar districts – Jamui, Munger, Bhagalpur, Lakhisarai and Banka – to protest the arrest and alleged custodial torture of a self-styled ‘area commander’ Kamlesh alias Deepak July 6.

A few days ago, Maoist rebels bombed the Chitriya block office near Motihari, district headquarters of East Champaran.
