Violence a throwback to the troubles 90s: Omar Abdullah

New Delhi : The four days of continued violence in the Kashmir Valley, pitched battles between civilians and the police and the paralysis of the administration are a throwback to the turbulent 1990s, says National Conference president Omar Abdullah.
"The violence I see played out for the last four days reminds me of how the situation was close to what it was in the early 1990s when armed conflict broke out. Spontaneous protests, shops shut, roads empty of traffic, it is all too disturbing and familiar," Abdullah told IANS over the phone from Srinagar.
In his reckoning, the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) - the organisation coordinating the annual Hindu pilgrimage to a cave shrine in south Kashmir - should voluntarily surrender its claim to the 40 hectares of forest land if peace is to return to the valley.
"Seeing all this, the SASB should surrender the land graciously. After all money has not changed hands and the pilgrimage has always been a symbol of Kashmiriyat. Let's not destroy that."
Kashmiriyat is the word largely used to define the ethno-national and social consciousness and cultural values of the Kashmiri people - both Hindus and Muslims.
The valley has been gripped by protests after Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's government transferred 40 hectares of forestland to the SASB on the plea that the land was needed for the construction of prefabricated huts and toilets for the pilgrims.
But Kashmiri Muslims are opposed to the deal saying the SASB would use the land to construct permanent structures.
At least four people have been shot dead by the police and scores injured as the police battle to control the pockets of violence that have erupted in major and minor towns in the valley which is predominantly Muslim.
"These are not orchestrated protests. There is spontaneity and it is breaking out all over."
Kashmiris have been historically sensitive about transfers of land in the state.
Many of them feel that the only way to preserve their identity is by retaining control of the land.
"The controversy started when the former governor of the state, S.K. Sinha, sidelined the descendants of Buta Malik, the Muslim shepherd to whose credit goes the discovery of the Amarntah cave," said Abdullah.
"Land is an emotional issue in Kashmir and that too forest land. I simply can't believe that it was lost on this administration when they did the switch," said Abdullah, who stoutly maintained that the rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling coalition partner, was party to the decision.
"Both the PDP's law and forest ministers were very much part of the decision making process. The file came back to them at least four times. And now to say they were ignorant of the decision simply does not wash," said Abdullah.
Every year, thousands of devotees flock to the Amarnath cave, considered one of the holiest shrines of the Hindu faith. The cave shrine houses a stalagmite structure, which is seen as an icon of Lord Shiva, one of the Hindu Trinity.
"Political groupings across the state are trying to make capital of the situation. The BJP and the Congress have their own agenda and the PDP knows that it has no constituency outside the valley," said Abdullah, hinting that the decision could be a major issue in assembly elections due less than four months away.
Insiders in the National Conference also point out that should Azad's government rescind its decision in the face of violent protests it would still give a major boost to separatists.
"Then, you might have a bigger problem to deal with. Remember what happened after PDP chief, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's daughter, Rubaiya was abducted in 1989 and then released after the then government relented. It gave militancy a shot in the arm," warned Abdullah.
"The only way out from this mess is for the SASB to see sense and act on their own."

Kashmiris resent the fact that allotment of land to the amarnath shrine board will open a pandora box, make its border porous and compromise with the article 370 as enshrined in the Indian Constitution. Their fear is not totally unfounded. Their fear stems from the right wing political party, BJP and others, who every now and then talks about the abrogation of article 370. They are apprehensive of the things that might entail.
Kashmiris are of the opinion that the govt should step in and provide all logistical support and help to the amaranth pilgrims – what the shrine board intended to do and not the other way round. The govt should rope in local populace in providing langar or community feast and other probable assistance. This way it will bridge the divide between kashmiri and non-kashmiri and cement the ties, bonding and friendship with each other by invoking the all encompassing philosophy of Kashmiriyat.
But, Alas! Politics have over taken the humane element of work and discord is all pervasive for all to see.
Hand our land back!!!!
All these years the yatra has been going on smoothly for 15-20 days with 3000-4000 yatris visiting only.
Now the Indian Govenment with its collaborators in kashmir like N.C,P.D.P,Congress r making it 2-3 month affair with 10 lakh pilgrims they claim to make them visit amarnath & for this purpose illegitametly 40 acres of land have been transferred to SASB & mainstream parties who now r in opposition r trying to gain vote banks by opposing it,but it was N.C which made SASB in 2002 & P.D.P & Congress bestowed lots of powers to it & now SASB is running a parallel government.
I as a kashmiri appeal to all my hindu brothers that do come on yatra we r never against them or yatra & we will serve them well as we r doing & the cave itself was discovered by a muslim,but we r against the illegal transfer of land & if INDIA thinks they will be able to supress our geniune demands they should face the reality that we have matyred more than a lakh persons for our freedom struggle against india & we can offer more than that to revoke this order as we will never allow india to change our demography & make Palestine like conditions here as they will never suceed in making Amarnath Nagar in Kashmir.
We will always be hospitable to outsiders & this resistance against land transfer belongs to all Kashmiris Ireespective of Religion,caste or color.

More Muslims leave in rest of India than Kashmir. Why dont you take actions against foreign militants who invade Kashmir and driven out Non Muslims from the valley? Where were you when message for Non Muslims to quit Kashmir were announced through Public Address Systems in Mosque? India is providing enough for Muslims. Is Pakistan providing any support to its minorities? Kashmir is an integral part of India. Stop thinking on relegious and regionalist lines. Lets work for common good and a Federal Republic of South Asia where states are given certain level of autonomy and people have more freedom to move to where ever they want to with in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Butan, Srilanka and Bangladesh. Eurpoean States have fought severe wars but now they are one with out borders between them. Think beyond Kashmir, Pakistan or India. We have millions to be taken out of poverty in South Asia. Lets work together.

Return the land to Kashmirees peacefully

Just as an example to your bullshit...in 1947 India was not divided into hindu India and muslim pakistan. Had it been the case, half of present India would have gone to pakistan.....It was divided into secular India and muslim pakistan.
Return the land peacefully. The way it has been done was wrong. Don't get over confident that India can do anything to Kashmir. It's a very sensitive region and lot of millitary is involved in peacekeeping.
This issue has become mass movement. Don't take the muslim tolerance as weakness. Hindus are living peacefully in the valley.
If you feel that thousands of acres are occupied by muslim masjids....you should also know that thousands of acres are illegaly occupied by hindu temples.
