Cairo : Arab foreign ministers on Wednesday hold an ordinary meeting on the latest developments in the Mideast region and arrangements for the upcoming Arab summit to be held in Damascus, Syria later this month.
A resolution on the Israeli military operations in Gaza Strip and measures to support the Palestinian people are expected to be adopted at the ministerial meeting at the headquarters of the Cairo-based Arab League.
The top agenda of the meeting also include the situation in Lebanon and means of breaking the political deadlock in the deeply divided country, as well as arrangements for the upcoming 20thArab summit to be held in Damascus, Syria on March 29-30.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem told reporters here on Tuesday night that Syria will send an invitation to Lebanon to attend the Arab summit, noting that a representative can be sent in case a new Lebanese president has not been elected by then.
Saudi Arabia will also be invited to attend the summit, Muallem added.
Earlier reports said the summit may be postponed since some Arab countries threatened to boycott the meeting if Syria does not facilitate the election of Army commander Gen. Michel Suleiman as Lebanese president.
Syria is accused of obstructing the presidential elections in Lebanon through its opposition allies.
Lebanese presidential seat has been vacant since former president Emile Lahoud stepped down on Nov. 24, 2007 and the sharply divided Lebanese parliament has delayed the elections for15 times without a consensus.
