Chennai : Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s daughter Priyanka quietly visited the memorial to her father and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi near here Wednesday, police sources said Thursday.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra flew into Chennai early Wednesday and quickly drove to Sriperumbudur, about 50 km away where a Sri Lankan woman suicide bomber blew up Rajiv Gandhi at an election rally in May 1991.
She then travelled by road to a temple at Vellore, 180 km from Chennai. She flew back to New Delhi later Wednesday.
Few leaders of the Congress party were aware of Priyanka’s lightning visit. One official said: “It was a private visit and nothing more.”
