Senior ministry officials told IANS that the letter sent out to the states was not only to determine the outfit’s suspected involvement in cases of communal violence but also to establish if it had any “terror linkages”.

“We have been receiving intelligence reports of some radical rightwing groups’ association in bomb blasts in the country. We want a status report from state governments before proceeding further,” said a senior official.

According to an official release, “incidents of communal violence have taken place in some parts of the country recently.

“This has led to demands for strict action against the individuals and groups involved in the incidents. In this regard, the home ministry has written to state governments and sought details of the action they may have taken.”

Over the last two months there have been demands from many political parties to ban the Bajrang Dal, especially in the wake of the anti-Christian violence in Orissa that has left at least 36 people dead and rendered thousands homeless.
