Third, Fourth Front leaders’ only personal ambition PM’s chair: Sonia

By IANS,

Lalgola/Shamsi (West Bengal) : Describing the emergence of the Third Front and Fourth Front as the result of the personal ambitions of some leaders to become prime minister, Congress president Sonia Gandhi Monday said these formations were without issues and principles.

“It is the latest fashion. Everybody wants to become prime minister,” she mocked during her election rallies in West Bengal in support of her party’s candidates.

“You (some parties) talk of setting up the Third Front and the Fourth Front. What is the need for these Third and Fourth Fronts? It’s only for the chair. For whom? To fulfil one’s own interest,” Gandhi said, addressing a public rally at Shamsi in Malda district in support of Congress candidate Mausam Benazir Noor.

“There are no principles, no issues involved. The only aim is to grab power,” she added.

In contrast, Gandhi said neither she nor incumbent Manmohan Singh had any hankering for the top job.

“Our only aim is to serve the poor, the tribals, and the backward,” she said.

Earlier, campaigning at Lalgola in Murshidabad district for External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Gandhi ridiculed the left for trying to cobble up a Third Front by adding small pieces.

Doubting the political philosophy of leaders in the Third Front, she said: “Most of the people in this combination are sometimes on this side, and sometimes on the other, and their only target is the Prime Minister’s chair.”

The country needs a strong, secular and stable government, which only the Congress could give, she said.
