Parliament to discuss Liberhan report next week: Bansal

By IANS,

New Delhi : The discussion on Liberhan Commission report in parliament, slated for Tuesday but postponed, will now be held next week, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said Tuesday.

The discussion in the Lok Sabha would take place on Dec 7 or Dec 8, Bansal said.

“But the exact date would be decided in the Business Advisory Committee meeting,” he said.

The Rajya Sabha is, however, scheduled to take up discussion on the report on Dec 9.

Though the debate in the Lok Sabha was scheduled for Dec 1, the government urged the speaker to postpone it after the Samajwadi Party insisted that copies of report should be made available in Hindi also.

However, officials of the parliamentary affairs ministry revealed that the Samajwadi Party had not insisted for the same when the date for discussion was scheduled.

Earlier, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Basudeb Acharia told IANS that the discussion on the Liberhan report was postponed because the Hindi translation was “not made available”.

“It is an utter failure on the part of the government,” Acharia said.

The Liberhan Commission report was tabled in parliament last Tuesday. The Hindi translation was not tabled as it was not ready.

The commission probed the Dec 6, 1992, razing of the 16th century Babri Masjid by Hindu right wing groups, which triggered communal riots across the country. The report has indicted many BJP leaders.
