Centre sets up panel to probe charges against AMU VC

New Delhi: The Human Resource Development Ministry has appointed a two-member committee to probe charges against the top officials including the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim Univeristy.

The committee comprising retired Justice Fakhruddin from the Madhya Pradesh High Court and A H Jung, a retired officer of Indian Audits and Accounts Service, will conduct a full Visitor enquiry into the affiars of the university and submit its report within three months. Charges ranging from financial bungling to violation of rules and regulations have been levelled against AMU VC Prof PK Abdul Azis, AMU Registrar and other officials.

One month back President of India, who is Visitor of the university, had issued a show-cause notice to the VC on various charges levelled against him. Not satisfied with his reply the President had approved a full enquiry into the affairs of AMU. Acting on it, the HRD Ministry has constituted the probe panel.

The AMU staff have been making allegations against each other. Some time back a group of AMU’s executive council had reportedly met the President of India and complained about the VC and other officials.

Meanwhile, Muslim religious leaders have come out in open to support the VC and his team. They say the allegations against VC have no basis and have been levelled by vested interests whose interests were not being protected by the VC. Reacting on the probe order by Kapil Sibal, HRD Minister, Thy have issued a joint press statement terming the allegations against the VC as “motivated, frivolous and trivial.” Signatories to the statement include: Dr M Manzoor Alam, Chairman, Institute of Objective Studies and Secretary General, All India Milli Council, Kamal Farooqi, Chairman, Delhi State Minorities Commission, Dr Zafarul Islam Khan, President, All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat & Editor, Milli Gazette, Mahmood Madni, Secretary, Jamiat Ulema-I-Hind and Nusrat Ali, Secretary General, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.
