Maha govt announces redevelopment plan for Behrampada

By Abdul Hameed, TwoCircles.net,

Mumbai: In a laudable move Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan announced on Saturday that the victims of Behrampada fire will be allotted pucca houses through the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme and the area will be redeveloped on Dharavi lines.

According to SRA norms, the slum dweller whose name appears in the voters list as on 01.01.1995 and who is actual occupant of the hutment is eligible for rehabilitation. Each family will be allotted a self contained house of 225 sq. ft. carpet area free of cost. The development plan for Behrampada slum area has many amenities in it; viz. wider roads, electricity, ample water supply, playgrounds, schools, colleges, medical centers, socio-cultural centers etc.

The CM made the announcement yesterday during a meet with the officials, public servants, corporators and some MLAs at the collector’s office at Bandra (E) after personally visiting Behrampada area to take stock of the situation.

The redevelopment plan, as per the instruction from the CM, is expected to be worked out within 15 days either by Maharashtra Housing & Area Development Authority (MHADA) or by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) after a survey of the slum to learn the ground realities.

Chavan has promised that every affected person though not living on the ground floors will be given a roof on his head.

He announced that the government has sanctioned Rs 50 lakh from the disaster relief fund to provide temporary accommodation to the people whose homes were destroyed in the blaze. He announced Rs one lakh as compensation for the families of those who died in the fire.

A blaze had caught the Behrampada slum in Bandra, on June 17 which burnt hundreds of shanties and claimed three lives according to official figure. The locals, however, claim the death toll has reached at least to 11.

Thousands of people who have been affected from the fire are now living in nearby Sky Walk area, in open ground under tents. The heavy monsoon which may hit the city at any time may lead to hygienic problems.

The debris is still being removed and different NGOs are busy distributing relief materials to the affected ones. The CM ordered on Saturday that the transit camps be built at the earliest.

Behrampada in Bandra (East) is one of the biggest slums in the city and is home to nearly 70,000 people living in about 10,000 shanties spreading over 7-acre land, jointly owned by the railways and the state government.

If you think life is so easy

If you think life is so easy as you say think of demolishing your own house and feel the pain. You may be a crorepati but slumdwellers dnt even have the money to buy a beedi. And one more thing that most of the slum dwellers have paid the price for filling the marshy land (BC) and built their slums. I am one of them living here and you can check my returns, it may be more than yours.

Why use our tax money for these slums?

I strongly oppose this move by the CM. On what grounds are the slums being allotted pucca houses? What is he trying to prove?

They come here to stay illegally. Use (our) free water. Steal (our) electricity. Engage in criminal activities. DO NOT PAY TAX. Everyday 10-20 shanties are built.. who gives them permission?

Who asked them to come to a place like Bandra where the cost of land is so high?

Who alloted them fake ration cards? Who provided them with facilities?

Instead of cleaning up Mumbai, our ministers are
encouraging more slum colonies.

Clear all slums

Any slums set up after 22 BC should be demolished!!

Burn slums Evict Muslims and Handover to BJP Builders

and handed over to RSS/VHP/Bajrang Dal financiers (builders), eh ?

Chavan Bluffmaster

This is an election gimmick. Ashok Chavan and Congress Party (by extension) will not give evne Rs. 5/- to Bahrampada residents. WHY ? Cuz they are Muslims. Had it been Balaji Nagar., it could have been otherwise. Bahrampada will remain as it is. Only speeches. These are election times., so Ashok Chavan suddenly developed love for Bahrampada... but its a fake-love... People understand the realities... So this is a bluff. Ashok Chavan is taking muslim voters on the garden path., but he will fail... and fail badly.

redevelopment

hi

I heard that the cutoff date for SRA scheme has been extended till 1.1.2000 so why not behrampada residents get houses till 2000 as per congress govt declaration.
