53 Mumbai Municipal Urdu schools without headmasters for long

Mumbai: All claims of Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) about betterment of education seem hollow as 53 vacancies of principals and 89 of vice principals in its schools have been vacant for long time.

Besides these vacancies, scores of posts for teachers are also vacant for long affecting lakhs of students, says a report in Inquilab daily. Despite repeated reminding, the BMC education department does not pay attention to it.

Shaikh Nasiruddin, the zonal secretary of Barihan Mumbai Mahanagarpalika Shikchhak Sabha, an NGO working for municipal teachers, said there are 205 Urdu medium schools among those run by BMC in eight native languages. There have for long been 53 and 89 vacancies unfilled for headmasters and deputy headmasters respectively. The teachers have to manage the department meetings and other official works that automatically affects class hours. He added that despite being informed several time the education department did not pay attention.

The concerned BMC officer reportedly said that ‘Presently record documents of the students and teachers are being computerized. We are trying to know which school has the vacant seats for headmasters, deputy headmasters or teachers. In the next year we will try to fill the vacancies.’

BMC runs about 1,162 primary schools wherein 4, 60,000 students are enrolled. Likewise there are 44,000 students in 49 secondary schools.
