“We have urged people to boycott the general elections in 2009 to strengthen our struggle for them,” Maoist spokesman Gopal said here in a press release issued Wednesday.

He said that the call was given by the Bihar-Jharkhand-north Chattishgarh special area committee of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist).

Maoists warned petty contractors and middlemen, who play a crucial role in elections, to stay away from election related activities.

The CPI-Maoist directed its cadres to mobilise public support to boycott the elections. It stated that the government will deploy central paramilitary forces in large numbers to suppress the boycott call.

“But we will give it a befitting reply this time,” Gopal said.
