Kochi: Kerala might lose the regional campus of the AMU if it did not transfer the promised land in time, warned the Aligarh Muslim University. The amount set aside for the project could not be used if the state failed to transfer around 150 acres of land in the first phase within this month, warns the letter sent by the AMU to the state Principal Secretary, according to reports.

The AMU sent the letter fearing that Kerala might lose the campus if the land is not transferred in time, said AMU VC Dr PK Abdul Azeez. The Kerala government had promised to hand over 150 acres of land in the first phase by October 31, but has not yet transferred the land even though nearly two weeks have passed after the set date.

Kerala had earlier informed the AMU and the Human Resources Ministry that the government land (of the Industries Department) at Panakkad near Malappuram town would be given for setting up the campus. Education Minister MA Baby had informed this in the Assembly also. But the government later said that the land could not be used as the Industries Department was against it. Then the government informed the AMU that land was selected at Perinthalmanna for the purpose and that the government was going forward with the survey procedures. The VC had then visited the land at Perinthalmanna and had asked the government to hand over the land immediately after arranging proper road facilities.

The VC had also reportedly informed the Revenue officials that neither the consultancy could be appointed nor report be submitted after a chance study unless the land was transferred. This followed the announcement of the Revenue Minister KP Rajendran that 150 acres of land would be transferred by October 31 in the first phase and the rest of the land would be handed over by December 31. The announcement was made reportedly in the presence of the District Collector and other revenue officials. The information was passed over to the University also. However, doubts are arising reportedly in the AMU authorities whether the state could hand over the land entangled in legal cobweb within the stipulated time.
