Teresa Rehman awarded Sanskriti Award 2009 for Journalism

New Delhi: Teresa Rehman of Assam has been awarded Sanskriti Award for 2009 for her work in the field of journalism.

Sanskriti Award is presented to young talents in the age group of 25-35 years in the fields of Literature, Journalism, Art, Performing Arts and Social Achievement. This is the 30th year of this prestigious award. Award carries Rs. 50,000 in cash and a citation.

Teresa Rehman based in Assam is the Principal Correspondent of Tehelka for Northeast India. She has consistently been trying to highlight the myriad hues of the hitherto unexplored and conflict-torn Northeastern region of India. She has been honoured for her work on pertinent issues on culture, society, women, children, health, education, rural employment and the disabled. She has travelled to several militant camps in the Northeast and has done series of stories on conflict in the region.

An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi, Rehman was awarded the Seventh Sarojini Naidu Prize 2007 for Best Reporting on Panchayati Raj by The Hunger Project. She was also honoured with the Kunjabala Devi Memorial Award for Investigative Journalism on Women’s issues by The Assam Tribune group in 2003.

She had also represented India in a 10-day capacity building programme titled “Advancing Women’s Leadership in Global AIDS Policymaking” in the US Congress, Washington DC and the United Nations Headquarters, New York, USA in June 2008. She was also one of the 40 journalists from all over the world who participated in the World Water Forum at Istanbul, Turkey in March 2009.

She had earlier worked with India Today magazine and The Telegraph.
