Massive anti-encroachment drive in Chandigarh

By IANS,

Chandigarh: A massive anti-encroachment drive was carried out in this union territory Tuesday to recover illegally occupied land for the development of third phase of Chandigarh, officials said.

“Unauthorised encroachments made on nearly 46.30 acres of land in village Palsora were removed today (Tuesday). Administration has taken over this land for the development of third phase of this city in a planned manner,” an official spokesman said.

“The enforcement staff removed 105 kabaris (junk-dealers), nearly dozen cattle sheds, 50 rooms or structures made of bricks and cement, and nearly 30 slums, which had been constructed illegally on this land,” he said.

Senior officials of Chandigarh administration and over 300 police personnel were mobilised during this anti-encroachment drive.

“The demolition drive will be continued tomorrow (Wednesday) to remove around 100 more structures,” the spokesman added.

Chandigarh is one of the most well planned cities of the country and was designed by legendary French architect Le Corbusier in 1950s.
