Kannan, a former state assembly speaker, had merged his party – the Puducherry Munnetra Congress (PMC) – with the Congress party last month.

According to a Puducherry Election Commission official, the election results will be declared around 3 p.m.

Four people had filed their nominations for the elections. But the nominations of three independent candidates were rejected as they did not fulfil the required norms.

Kannan was the health minister in the cabinet of M.O.H. Farook from 1985 to 1990 and was elected the speaker in 1991.

The 30-member Puducherry assembly has representatives from the Congress (13), the DMK (7), the AIADMK (3), the PMK (2), the Communist Party of India (1), the MDMK (1) and three independents.
