Shanties flooded but government remains indifferent and blames rain

New Delhi: If somebody wants to see human beings living in sub human conditions, then s/he can just go to the backside of Jogabai Extension, an area which is very close to Yamuna River.
Take the case of Qamar Ahmad and Mehrun Nisa, his wife. They are forced to live along with their 4 children in a place which is flooded with filthy and dirty water. This correspondent had to literally enter the knee-deep water in order to talk to Qamar and his family. Thanks to continuous rain and the utter apathy of the government of Delhi, this is their condition since last one week after the water level in Yamuna rose beyond the danger mark and entered their area.

“It’s all filthy water and is a breeding ground of dengue mosquitoes but we are forced to live here because I am just a Rickshaw-puller and don’t have resources to shift to any other place,” says Mr. Qamar, with anger and helplessness implicit in his voice.
Talking to TwoCircles.net, he complains that no body comes in this area. The MLA had come just once and assured them of some place where they could shift but nothing has been done yet, he added.

Mehrun Nisa and Aaesha, her youngest daughter, have symptoms of dengue. When Qamar took them to Holy family, the nearby hospital, there was no room for further patients. So, as the last resort they are taking medicines from a local doctor; because being poor, he can’t afford treatment in Apollo, the nearby private and expensive hospital.
Qamar Ahmad’s family is not alone in living in this condition. There are around thousands of people affected by this flood like situation in Delhi. The water level in the River Yamuna crossed the danger mark a week back itself which is set at 204.8 meters. When the water rose above it, low-lying areas of the capital got submerged. People residing in low-lying areas and the nearby shanties were trapped as the river breached its banks, flooding fields.

Like Mehrun Nisa, Murtaza Beigh too is having fever for last 4 days, one of the dengue symptoms but he doesn’t have any where to go. A hawker by profession, Murtaza told this correspondent that the government some times sends drinking water tank in this area ; but it gets hijacked by a bit well off class living nearby this slum, which uses it for the purposes other than drinking. So the people of this area are forced to drink the contaminated water of the hand pump in the nearby area.

Local politicians blame government
“I have established a camp for people like Qamar Ahmad. They should go there,” says Asif Mohammad Khan, the local MLA.
But it turns out that there are just two camps, another one has been established by the government of Delhi, which are highly insufficient for hundreds of men, women and children. There is no space left in them for thousands of people who live in cottages on the bank of Yamuna.

The MLA blames the state government. “I can’t do every thing. I did whatever I can to help out the people in need.”
MCD and DJB blame rain
The officials of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the two agencies responsible for solving this situation, blame rain and the water being released by Haryana, the neighboring state for this mess.
“New Delhi has recorded a total of 617 mm of rainfall during this monsoon season, much higher than in the same period over previous years, which has led to the flood like situation in many parts of New Delhi. The water released in Yamuna by Haryana has also contributed to this situation,” says Mrs. Sanjam Cheema, spokesperson DJB

The normal day-to-day life of Qamar Ahmad and Murtaza Beigh and people like them, is anyways no less than a tragedy but what is a shame on the so called progressive society is, that even their tragedies don’t matter to the political class which instead of doing some thing for them, is busy in their favorite game, blame game.

However, any one of us can have bad financial conditions like them, any time in our life. May God help them to come out unscathed from this extremely difficult situation.

You cannot dig your grave and blame everybody. Further the plight is the same for all poor across society. If the same could have been more for poor then it is a different story. Sympathy extends only to muslim in this space. Even if a hindu comes and saws to me that i have four children, i will never help him as i will be encourageing the wrong person. Rather i would go ahead and assist people with smaller family size as they are having the thought of responsibility to bring up child

If only muslim have bigger families than how come muslims were 11% 60 yrs back and still 12-13 % ( read india census)today when Indian population rose from 35 crores to 120 crores in 60 years, who borne these large number of kids when muslim percentage of population is stable??..go and see around your uncle , aunty and brothers increasing the population and ask them to find out some other means of entertainment than only increasing india population can be checked.

Just because the government is corrupt and inefficient, it doesn't mean that municipal chores become the responsibility of ordinary citizens. What is the government doing with all the taxes that it collects?
Give me a break! These poor people are struggling on a daily basis to make ends meet. How can you expect them to take up tasks that the Delhi Municipal Corporation, with all of it's massive resources, is not willing to do?
So what if they have four children? Is it a crime in India to have four children? These people may be poor but they are upright law-abiding citizens. If anything, the corrupt and inefficient government of India is committing a crime by not providing basic human needs that is the birth right of every human being. Please don't blame the victims for the crime here.
If population was so much of a concern, why didn't the Indian government pass a law making it a crime to have more than two children? China has had the one-child law for more than thirty years because their government had the guts to do so. The stupid Indian government should end it's obsession with Pakistan and try to learn something from China. In Chinese cities, basic sanitation, water supply, roads, electricity, and train services are decades ahead of India.
You claim that the Indian government is indifferent to poor irrespective of religion. However, the real issue is that a disproportionately high percentage of one religious community is poor.

Some NAIVE parties have ALREADY STARTED BANNING "cow-slaughter", depriving MILLIONS of NOT ONLY their LIVELIHOOD, but WHAT TO and WHAT NOT TO have as part of their MEAL !
Now some naive commentators are counting no. of children. Which direction are we going ? Which country are we living ? Communist, Dictatorship, or Democracy ?

First i thank the admin for allowing the post which i felt will not go through. With regard to the attitude of people, who is responsible, if the individual keeps on increasing the family size. By the way even the wealthy gcc countries have stopped giving doles for its people and expect them to work. This is because the ruling family itself has become a city thanks to speed in procreation.
As per the nature of law, the wants are unlimited and the resources are limited. Human being is given the intelligence to handle this contradiction.
There is no use in blaming the government for once own foolishness is a very mild statement. i can believe the previous generation having more than two children today even one child is a difficult to bring up if you want the best to be given and want to live with self respect and no alms.
Everybody says the road is dirty, what is expected of a common man is to keep his house and the road opposite to be clean will keep the road completely clean. So the change has to happen in individuals.
With regard to corruption, i am not supporting corruption what is the solution, is it an excuse for everybody to have bigger family and then complain. if that is people want then, it is their own making of their destiny to suffer.

Larger family to reduced income to poverty
If you have a larger family you cannot blame others. Please stop blaming others and take responsibilities. it is these poor and illiterate who votes these corrupt to power. In our constitutency nobody comes and canvas as they know that the educated will vote as per their wish. I go and cancel my vote and come as i dont see any good guy but these guy take money and vote. It is my understanding that Delhi got so many muslims. I wonder what they are doing when their fellow brothers are in such a situation? Critisising the Government alone will not help as a community we have responsibilities especially in this month of holy Ramazan. Government never told them to have four children. Government is recommending people to have two children and if the people increase the family, i donot think so government will be rich enough to bail out everybody. God helps people who help themselves. Government can help people who plan their family. Further the government is indifferent to poor irrespective of religion. All are equal in that manner.

FYI Satwa, Number of children in a family is iversly propotional to economic standard of the family.It applies to all religious group in India.
Try visitng poor neighbourhood of various communities. It will become clear to you. It has been propoganda of RSS that only Muslim have more children.

If the birth rates are high, have they given the statistics of religion. Next to india is pakistan, is it an accident are indication that it is the muslim population which is growing. Further no western had got specific rules against hindus in spite of large amount if immigrants. There is no alarm in the western world for the building of temples. Do some soul searching if it is open and objective without prejudices.

Two children norm
India can do one or two child norm, it if it is only hindus as hindus religion is open to changes and the following changes has been done in law :
1. ban of child marriage
2. equal right on inheritance
3. ban of sati
4. ban of untouchability etcc..
Unfortunately we have minority called muslim which did not allow the supreme court judgement of alimony for a poor old woman. We require dictator like what singapore had for few years to do all good acts.

Let's not change the topic here. As far as topics like Sati, Untouchability, Caste-based slavery & exploitation, Caste-based Honor-killings, and Khap Panchayats are concerned, let's keep them aside for debate some other time.
The topic at hand is the perception that law-abiding upright citizens are somehow doing grievous wrong by having more than two children. So the question that arises is this. Why didn't the BJP government pass a law banning more than two children when it was in power in the Centre? Several BJP state governments are busy trying to pass irrelevant laws like banning cow slaughter - so why not pass some law that would make a real difference for the country?
I am all for your idea of a benign dictatorship for India. But please stop blaming one religious community for all the problems. India is a country of laws, so pass laws if you have the guts and implement them. If you don't have the guts to do that, then stop blaming others.

If you can maintain have 15 wives and 100 child. Till the same is managed in your house, it is your personal problem. When you cannot manager the same and breed poverty, you are creating a social mess and probable criminals due to depravation.
I answer this dispassionately and this rule shall apply to all indian irrespective of relgiion whether it is hindu or muslim or christian.

There is something called compassion which is lacking in you due to obvious reason. This is why even supermacists like Teresa are god to you. Due to this attitude there are sincere doubts about you being a human being and remember this is not emotional but analytical comment. India is not bothering about the 80% but those who have accumulated wealth of 80% despite being 20%. Even if we divide the expenses on CWG making a pauper crorepati, we can have 78,000 of them. It would be better than the so called high standards of human life even if we distribute 78,000 each to one Crore but the problem is while distributing the money, nobody would be able to pocket it. Remember that it is this attitude which had people attacking India and changing its character. This is not going to stop as the so called 'developed cycle' entails someone to enslave India. It is overdue!!
