Prohibitory orders imposed in Meghalaya hills

Shillong : The Meghalaya government Friday imposed prohibitory orders in the Ri-Bhoi and West Garo Hills districts bordering Assam to forestall any possible trouble during the assembly elections in Assam, an official statement said.

The first phase of elections for the 126-member Assam assembly will be held April 4 in 62 constituencies while second phase will be held April 11 for the remaining 64 constituencies.

According to the statement, prohibitory orders were issued to ban carrying of arms and weapons by the public within an area of 5 km from the Meghalaya-Assam border.

The orders were issued to ensure free, fair and peaceful conduct of elections in Assam, the statement added.
