Kolkata : Paintings by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee put up on sale for raising funds for the assembly elections have attracted very good response with 30 of her artworks fetching Rs.60 lakh.
About 100 paintings by Banerjee, who is also the railway minister, are on display at an art gallery here. The three-day exhibition opened Monday.
Banerjee had earlier handed over the paintings to Jago Bangla, the official mouthpiece of Trinamool Congress, in order to raise funds for elections.
“The paintings were given free to Jago Bangla and as far as I know the response is superb to those paintings,” said senior Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien.
“Till now almost 31 paintings have been sold for a whopping 60 lakh rupees. The response is really great. People from every walk of life have come to see the exhibition,” said a Jago Bangla official.
The paintings had titles like ‘Jangalmahal’, ‘The Rhythm of Life’, ‘The Dawn’, ‘Unseen Dream’, ‘Faded Beauty’ and ‘Wind in Blue’.
In 2007, Rs.12 lakh was raised in a similar way. The amount was distributed among families in Nandigram.
