Son of the soil

Yes, he is from Tukrapara village in Goroimari block in the Chaygaon assembly constituency that falls in Kamrup district. When we reached his home about 70 kms from Guwahati town he was out holding door to door campaign.

The area has always elected people from outside. The sitting MLA Krishna Kanta Kalita of Asom Gana Parishad and rival Congress candidate Raqueebul Hassan are also outsider. So Haque is strongly projecting himself as son of the soil when he meets voters.

Why in politics

“For some years I was thinking about it. My area is dominated by Muslims. They are very poor. They are backward. The only reason is our MLA is always from Guwahati or other area, not from this area. I am local. I want to work for the uplift of the community,” said Aminul Haque to TwoCircles.net. Haque is raising the issues of poor road, lack of health facility and education and unemployment.

Goroimari is an identified minority concentration block while Kamrup with 26.79% minority population is a Minority Concentration District. Chaygaon constituency has a population of 140000. Muslims are 60000.

Priority

“If I win my priority will be employment for youth, health and education,” says Aminul Haque.

Prospects

Aminul Haque is relatively younger and a newcomer in politics. He is taking on a strong sitting MLA of AGP Krishna Kanta Kalita and muscleman Raqueebul Hassan of Congress. In the 2006 assembly poll, AGP had got 62113 votes and Congress secured 43818 votes while AIUDF with 4701 votes was at No. 3. Will Aminul Haque turn the table on rivals this year? Let’s wait for May 13—the counting day.
