By Mumtaz Alam Falahi, TwoCircles.net,

FA Ahmed Nagar, Dispur: Mohd Anowar Ali is the youngest of 79 candidates fielded by All India United Democratic Front in the ongoing Assembly poll in Assam. Though caste and community equation may not go in his favor, he is in the fray to take over Dispur constituency in Kamrup district that also holds Guwahati.

By training and profession Mohd Anowar Ali, 31, is a lawyer. He holds the degree of BA LLB from JB Law College, Guwahati. He has been involved in social activities and students unions. He was secretary of JB Law College students union. He was also secretary of Dispur College students union. He is also executive member of Lawyers Association, Guwahati. Earlier Adv Ali was with Congress, but now has shifted to AIUDF.

Political campaigns

To win the seat, Adv Anowar Ali is working hard. Though it’s a capital city constituency, many parts of the area, particularly those dominated by Muslims are backward in every sense—there is no road, electricity and water supply.
TwoCircles.net team caught him when he was addressing a public meeting in a village that is about 200 metres from the city road. Asked about the issues he is raising in his campaigns, Adv Anowar Ali said: “I am raising the issue of unemployment of youth, corruption, lack of road, electricity and water supply.” The sitting Congress MLA who is also a minister has not done anything for the area. He has pocketed the area development account, the AIUDF candidate alleged.

Promises

Adv Anowar Ali is visiting nook and cornor of the city and urging people for a change. He is promising road, electricity and supply water in backward areas of the constituency. “If I won the seat, within one year I will bring road to this locality,” said Ali while about one hundred villagers clapping and cheering behind him.

Voting Record

Dispur constituency though has significant Muslim population it is dominated by Assamese Hindus and Bengali Hindus of middle class. It is difficult they will vote for a Muslim candidate. In the 2006 assembly poll, AIUDF could get only 2617 votes while Akon Bora of Congress won the seat with 52461 votes. TNGP with 51648 votes was at No. 2 and BJP with 50343 votes at No. 3.

Hope

Maybe not much hopeful about himself, Adv Anowar Ali hopes that after the election AIUDF of Badruddin Ajmal will play a major role in government formation. “No government will be formed without AIUDF,” he says.
