Guwahati: Assam Election Watch (AEW) has released the list of candidates of the second phase of Assam Assembly elections with their criminal records. AEW has analyzed 395 affidavits of candidates contesting second phase of elections in 64 constituencies which is going to be held on April 11. It was found that out of the 395 candidates, 41 candidates i.e. 10% (out of 395 analyzed) have self declared pending criminal charges while 13 candidates out of these 41 analyzed, i.e. 3%, have declared serious IPC charges like murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping and extortion charges against them. All major parties have given tickets to candidates with pending criminal cases of which AIUDF tops the list with 27%, AGP 13%, INC 9% and BJP 5% of candidates having pending criminal charges.

In the Assam Assembly Elections of 2006, 6% of the candidates had pending criminal cases and 3% candidates had serious pending criminal cases against them. Thus it can be seen that there has been an increase in the percentage of criminals from the last Assembly elections in Assam.
