The accused have been identified as Shane Alam alias Aslam, Israr Khan and Vicky — all aged 25 and hailing from Uttar Pradesh. They were previously arrested by police in Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh.

Their modus operandi was to specifically target females during early and late hours.

“We observed that there was a sudden spurt in incidents of vehicle lifting and snatching in Chandigarh. Therefore, our crime branch launched a special drive and nabbed these culprits March 29,” said Chandigarh’s Senior Superintendent of Police H.S. Doon.

“During interrogation, we found that this gang was involved in over 25 cases, including chain snatchings, car thefts and two-wheeler lifting. So far, we have recovered six cars and 17 motorcycles from their possession,” he added.

Police have also arrested Ravi Kumar, who runs a gold ornaments shop here.

“The miscreants used to sell the stolen gold chains to Ravi. They were selling the vehicles in other states like Delhi, Haryana and Punjab,” said Doon.
