Poll campaigning peaks in north Bengal districts

Siliguri : With only three days of campaigning left in the first phase of assembly elections in West Bengal, senior political leaders from all major parties are set to address public meetings in the state.

Canvassing for votes ends April 16 for the April 18 polls in 54 constituencies spread over six north Bengal districts – Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, North Dinjapur, South Dinajpur and Malda.

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi will campaign in Matigara-Naxalbari, Malbazar, and Malda Thursday.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi will address elecgtion meetings in Jalpaiguri and Malda districts April 15 for the Congress candidates.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Thursday will campaign in Jalpaiguri district.

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury and other star campaigners are also scheduled to hold meetings for the first phase polls.

Trinamool Congress chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has been busy campaigning in north Bengal districts since April 10.

Senior congress leader and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, West Bengal Left Front chairman Biman Bose and BJP president Nitin Gadkari had addressed election rallies and held roadshows for their respective candidates in Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling districts a few days back.

The six-phase polls for the 294-seat West Bengal assembly will be held between April 18 and May 10.

Counting of votes will be held May 13.
