West Bengal: Fate of 57 Muslim candidates being locked in EVM today

Kolkata: Votes are being cast in the Phase 1 poll today in West Bengal. People are exercising their democratic power to select their MLA in 54 constituencies spreading over 6 districts: Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur and Maldah. There are a total number of 364 candidates in the fray for Phase 1 — 57 of them are Muslims.

Of 57 Muslim candidates 11 are women. The ruling Left Front has fielded 11 Muslim candidates — 7 from CPI-M, 3 from Forward Block and one from RSP. The TMC-Congress alliance has fielded equal number of Muslim candidates — 7 from Congress and 4 from TMC. BSP has also fielded Muslim candidates on 6 seats. CPIM(L) and IPFB have two Muslim candidates while two Muslim candidates are contesting on BJP ticket. JD(U), PDCI, Muslim League and SUCI have fielded one Muslim candidate each in the Phase 1. Independent Muslim candidates are 19.

Among the Muslim women candidates 3 are from CPI-M while TMC, Congress, BSP and IPFB have fielded one each. Four Muslim women candidates are Independents.

There are 11 sitting Muslim MLAs from the areas being covered in Phase 1 today. Muslim candidates are contesting in 19 constituencies. Most of these seats have more than one Muslim candidate.
