P Kamal Kutty retires as Kerala Election Commissioner

Thiruvananthapuram: P Kamal Kutty retired as Kerala state Election Commissioner. He was appointed to the post on April 17, 2006 and has now completed five years. The state Election Commissioner is in charge of holding the local body elections.

Mr Kamal Kutty was appointed to the post after he retired as the Principal Secretary of the Public Works Department. He has served in different post such as Panchayat-Urban Affairs Director, Registrar of the Agriculture University, district Collector of Kasargod and Kannur, etc. Hailing from Kannur, he has also served as lecturer in the Sir Syed College, Taliparamb. He oversaw about 750 by-elections, one general election and also disposed off 200 election-related cases during his tenure, according to reports.

The new Election Commissioner is K Sasidharan, who had earlier served as Thiruvananthapuram Chief Judicial Magistrate, District Judge and Vigilance Enquiry Commission, etc. The native of Adoor was the Law Secretary since 2009.
