Bhopal: A high level probe has been demanded into the root cause of the violence following stone-pelting incident in Itwara locality of Bhopal wherein tensions ran high as Muslims and Kanjars came face to face in the wee hours of August 11. The demand for probe has been made by the Coordination Committee of Indian Muslims, (CCIM), Madhya Pradesh unit. While condemning the incident, the committee has expressed grave concern over the violence and patted police for controlling the situation before it took an ugly turn.

Mr. Masood Ahmad Khan, secretary of CCIM, demanded that the police should bust the drug peddlers’ racket in the Itwara locality and stop illegal liquor trade in the area. The committee expressed concern over reports of indiscriminate arrests and said that the real culprits behind the violence should be identified and nabbed. Innocents should not be framed, the group said.

The CCIM also urged the district administration to remove encroachments from the Itwara locality.

Meanwhile, Bhopal’s Shahar Qazi Syed Mohammad Fazil Qasmi, has filed a complaint with the local police seeking action against those circulating SMSs in his name, advising people not to buy clothes from particular shops. The Qazi stated in the complaint that neither he nor anyone associated with him had sent this SMS, and it seemed to be a mischief aimed at disrupting the communal harmony.

It may be mentioned here that prior to the stone-melting incident tension gripped the city a few days ago, when some Muslim youths tried to prevent women from the community from shopping by themselves — without a “Mahram” (male relative) — in the local market. It had followed a sermon by Qazi regarding whether women should step out alone for shopping. However, he said his message had been misunderstood. The complaint has been registered in the Kotwali Police Station.
