Marad riots: 9 sentenced to five-year jail term

Kozhikode: Nine persons have been sentenced to five-year jail term and fine of Rs 11,000 in a case related to the first Marad riots. The Marad Special Court Judge Sophy Thomas pronounced the punishment in the case of setting fire to the house of Bichami, wife of Kinattingalakath Yusuf.

Choyichantakath Ramadasan, Choyichantakath Suraj, Kelappantakath Krishnan, Kelappantakath Unni, Kelappantakath Kishor Kumar, Kelappantakath Sundaran, Choyichantakath Santhosh, Kannantepurayil Subodh and Arayachantakath Sanathanan are the convicts. They were convicted under different sections of the IPC for rioting, using deadly weapons, creating communal strife, etc. The court has also reportedly ruled for extra jail term on the failure of payment of the fine.

The incident related to the case took place around 8 pm on January 3, 2002. The convicts reportedly got into the house of Bichami using force and set the house on fire, making a loss of around Rs 1.5 lakhs. Special Prosecutor Adv KV Joseph was present for the prosecution.
