Badal, who is Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s nephew and Deputy Chief Minister and Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal’s cousin, had left the Akali Dal October last year following differences over governance issues.

A re-mix of popular patriotic song “Mera rang de basanti chola”, which has inspired generations of people, the 30-second ringtone is aimed at promoting Manpreet’s ‘Jago Punjab Yatra’ (Awaken Punjab journey) that he has been undertaking in recent weeks.

The ringtone comes free to users.

The support that the former finance minister’s political activities have got in recent days has set alarm bells ringing in the Akali Dal and the main opposition Congress camps.

Punjab goes in for assembly elections February-March next year (2012).

Both parties are targeting him to pin him down politically. His ‘Jago Punjab Yatra’ will cover Punjab’s 117 assembly constituencies in 117 days.

Manpreet Badal was able to show his political clout with a big rally at the Magh Mela in Punjab’s Muktsar district last week. The gathering at his political rally matched that of the Akali Dal and the Congress.
