BJP member of parliament Chandan Mitra, who is in charge of the party’s affairs in West Bengal, said here that the Nav Jagran rath-yatra, starting from Cooch Behar Jan 30 and ending in Kolkata Feb 15 with a rally, will also project the party’s peace and development agenda.

“Both the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and Trinamool Congress are equaly responsible for lawlessness. They are in politics of competitive violence,” Mitra said.

He said that price rise began in 2004 when the CPI-M was spporting the United Progressive Alliance government and both the Congress and Trinamool Congress have to answer for the present rise in prices.

The BJP will also oppose the announcement by the Left government in the state to give quota to Muslims in jobs, he added.

“The BJP is opposed to reservation at every level on the basis of religion. Any additional reservation should be only on economic criterion,” Mitra said.

He pointed out that the economic condition of the state has gone “from bad to worse” in the last 34 years and the Trinamool Congres is not capable of providing an alternate plan.

The BJP plans to contest all 294 assembly seats in West Bengal but will explore possibilities of alliances with local parties in some parts of the state, he said.

Former BJP president Rajnath Singh will flag off the rath yatra at Cooch Behar Jan 30 and senior party leader L.K. Advani will address a rally at Kolkata Feb 15.

Mitra said that the rally will be followed by a meeting of national office-bearers in Kolkata Feb 16.
