Senior journalist Sajid Rashid passes away

Mumbai: Senior Urdu journalist, writer, activist and executive editor of Sahafat Urdu daily, Mumbai, Sajid Rashid died here on Monday. He was admitted in Prince Aly Khan Hospital, Mazgaon for open heart surgery but could not survive after the operation.

A collection of his short-stories was published in 2004 as Ek Chota sa Jahannum(A Small Hell). He was the editor of an evening publication, Hamara Mahanagar and was also the chairperson of Maharashtra State Urdu Academy.

A well known leftist, Rashid also worked in several Urdu and Hindi dailies and was associated with Muslims for Secular democracy (MSD). He had been accused of blasphemy and was attacked once for writing a defaming article on Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He also fought unsuccessfully Assembly election in Mumbai.
