Five pilgrims killed in Uttar Pradesh accident

Lucknow : Five pilgrims, including three teenaged girls, were killed and 10 others critically injured when a speeding bus ploughed into the jeep carrying them in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district, police said Tuesday.

The accident took place late Monday along the Bundki-Nagina route when the private bus rammed into the jeep carrying the pilgrims from Haridwar.

“While four pilgrims died on the spot, another succumbed early Tuesday while undergoing treatment in hospital. Ten pilgrims were critically injured. The condition of five is stated to be serious,” police inspector Kuldeep Singh told reporters in Bijnor, 350 km from here.

“Those travelling in the jeep were from Dhirvi village in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh and had gone to Haridwar for a religious function,” he added.

Police are yet to nab the driver of the bus who escaped soon after the accident.
