Chennai : With protests mounting against his wife’s candidature from Mylapore, Tamil Nadu Congress chief K.V. Thangkabalu has filed his nomination as a substitute candidate from the same constituency for the April 13 assembly elections.

Thangkabalu has been facing flak from party members and leaders for his choice of candidates, more so for fielding his wife Jayanthi from the Mylapore constituency.

The Congress, part of the DMK-led alliance, is contesting 65 out of the 234 assembly seats in the polls.

The party cadres rose in protest soon after the list of candidates was announced.

They attacked the party headquarters here and also held protests outside Thangkabalu’s residence.

According to Thangkabalu, his wife Jayanthi is the party’s official candidate and he is the substitute candidate.

Saturday was the last day for the filing of nominations.

As per the affidavit filed with the Election Commission, Thangkabalu has shown a income of Rs.4.5 million for the year 2009-10 and Rs.4 million for his wife.

The state Congress chief owns movable assets worth around Rs.34 million and immovable assets for around Rs.10 million. His total debt is around Rs.6 million.

Jayanthi’s movable assets are worth around Rs.31 million and immovable assets around Rs.17 million. She owns a debt of around Rs.16 million.

Interestingly there is a differrence of Rs.1million in the value of Thangkabalu’s movable assets as per the affidavits filed by both.

When Jayanthi has listed the value of movable assets of her husband as Rs.35 million Thangkabalu listed it as Rs.34 million.
