Lucknow: The campaign for Muslim reservation faced the first hurdle with several backward Muslims organisations opposing the demand. Their contention being reservation to all Muslims will rob the backward Muslims of their share.

Earlier, prominent Muslim clerics in a meeting held at Muzaffarnagar on Monday had demanded reservation to Muslims. In a clarion call, the clerics had appealed to the community to vote for party in coming Assembly polls which offers them reservation. The appeal was supported by Acting Vice-Chancellor, Darul Uloom Deoband, Maulana Abul Hasan Qasmi and his deputy Maulana Khalid Madrasi. Several members of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) too were present during the meeting and supported the call.

At Lucknow, Pasmanda Muslim Samaj (PMS) — an organisation of backward Muslims — in a meeting on Thursday decried the clerics of Deoband for their reservation call. “The reservation call by these clerics is politically motivated. Reservation benefits should be extended to backward Muslims only,” said President, PMS, Anees Mansoori. He even stated that the clerics have confined the Muslim community to madrasa only and denied quality education. “They are aware that if the community is educated it will be enlightened. It will affect their (clerics) numero uno status in the community. These clerics are mere pawn governed by political parties,” he added.

Mansoori stated that reservation based on religion is against constitutional norms in the country. “If they are really interested they should demand Dalit Muslims should also be extended reservation benefits as other communities,” he said. He claimed that Sachar Committee has described the backwardness of Muslim who hail from the backward category of the community.
