Green Building, also known as green construction, refers to a structure that is resource-efficient throughout its life-cycle — from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition.

“The suggestion on extra FAR (Floor Area Ratio) for Green Buildings is timely as the mid-term review of the 2021 Delhi Master plan is currently under way, and we shall certainly consider it,” Khanna said.

FAR in Delhi, or the Floor Space Index (FSI) in metros like Mumbai, is the ratio between the plot area and built-up floor area allowed on it. Higher FAR is considered an incentive by builders and buyers alike.

Khanna was speaking at the ongoing 9th edition of Green Building Congress 2011, organised by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

However, Khanna stressed the need to also focus on ways and means of “retrofitting” many existing buildings, especially hospitals and schools, adding that there was tremendous work to be done in this area. “Any little bit would be an improvement.”
